Kidney cyst

Has anyone had/have a kidney cyst?
I’ve had IBS for years and asked my gp if I could have a scan on my upper digestive system to check my gallbladder etc.
I had the ultrascan 2 weeks ago. The sonographer said all looked ok but I had a cyst on my left kidney (I don’t have any symptoms). I asked if this needed treatment and she said no probably not as it looked like a simple fluid filled cyst and if lots of people were scanned they would find many people have them. So off I went on my merry way.
However, today, out of the blue I get a copy of a letter to my gp (this was the copy to me) from a Nephrologist. My gp had asked for his opinion on this cyst. He has come back to say it needs to be referred to urology and ‘probably malignancy is in your thoughts and I’d assume they will perform a ct scan’!!
I’m shocked because when I rang the surgery last week they confirmed all was ok with the scan.
Typically, my gp is on holiday this week. I’ve rang and spoken to another gp who has told me the scanning department didn’t red flag my scan up as urgent and that my gp has asked for advice because although it looks like a simple fluid filled cyst, it is quite large.
I’m beside myself with worry.
Does anyone know much about kidney cysts?

It's a pity you didn't get a chance to talk to your gp to put your mind at ease, but if it helps, I'd be of the opinion that they're just doing their due diligence, to rule out any possibility of malignancy. Kidney cysts are very common and most likely benign. My son, 11, has two and wasn't refered for any further scans. I have a disorder that involves multiple - dozens- cysts on both kidneys, and they are all straight forward fluid filled sacs. So no medical expertise here, but hope my experience is helpful.

I've just got back from a scan on my no2 baby currently 26 weeks gestation. They found a simple cyst on baby's kidney at the 20 week anomaly scan. It's been a bit worrying but basically we were also told that cysts are very common, many people probably have them and don't know about them. I think if there's only one it's the least problematic version too, i,e as opposed to have multiple cysts.
Baby will be scanned when he/she is born but the consultant said he doesn't expect any further treatment to be needed.
I'm sure they're just scanning as an extra precaution. Hope all goes well!
