Anyone know how long you're infectious with a common cold? Need to know for rather important reason.

My dad is in his eighties and starts radiotherapy on Wed. I've got a cold and don't want to make him ill for Wed, having fought like a wildcat to get the radio pushed forward. But I'm meant to see him tomorrow for a bit of a party at my sister's. Could I stay over the other side of the room? My cold only started yesterday evening. Any thoughts?

I'd stay away as it'd be awful if he had to postpone radiotherapy- just to be on safe side - lots of luck to him too!

contagious while you have it i think but am not a DR so don't knowi wouldn't risk it tbh

Thanks, littlelapin. I'm inclined to that as well. I think we may have to suggest that he doesn't come; my sister may be coming down with one too. I've asked NHS Direct but they haven't come back to me. I'd like to see him on Monday at least; or Tuesday.

Thanks, I would hate him to have to postpone, too.

Fauve, I think colds can be transmitted by touch as well so you would have to not touch door handles etc. Best not to risk it imo. Could wave from inside car!

NHS Direct have just advised leaving it 'a couple of days' before seeing him. So I think I'll be OK seeing him on Tuesday, fingers crossed. Thanks for your responses and thoughts for Dad
