Scared that something is really wrong

I'm so worried I've had a really bad tummy for 4 weeks now..cant keep anything down. Theres crohn's and bowel cancer in my family both grandparents died of bowel cancer and I'm scared that they will just put it down to IBS as I'm apparently too young at 42.

They won't put it down to ibs unless you already have this diagnosis as ibs is only diagnosed after ruling out everything else first. You won't know their advice until you see the gp so book an appointment asap. And also as far as I know ibs doesn't cause vomiting (assuming vomit as you said can't keep anything down).

There’s all sorts it could be - IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion - when everything’s been ruled out.

I must disagree with the poster above, my gp told me i had ibs without doing anything, no urine sample, blood test, nothing.

Sorry didnt want to go into details but no sickness..its all coming from the bottom end and I've always suffered with IBS..that's also in the family but this totally different. I've seen gp blood test is scheduled but if that doesnt show anything I fear they wont do anything else and will put it down to ibs. I already suffer with fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, huge hernia with acid reflux. I dare not leave the house atm.

Push for further tests. Explain your family history and ask for a second opinion if you don't think you're being listened to.

Mean time keep a diary of food intake and the issues you're having (on a daily basis, and really try and note everything you eat and drink) to try and narrow down any triggers you might have.

Frequent diarrhoea could be a symptom of coeliac disease or various things that are not ideal but not so scary. If you haven't made an appointment to see your GP, do this soon - and don't be fobbed off if you're not happy with the response.

Sorry if I came across wrong. IBS should be a diagnosis of exclusion in accordance with NICE guidelines.

At the bare minimum bloods and stool sample should be tested.
