Haematology referral

Hi, just wondering if anybody can shed any light for me! I had some bloods taken a week last Wednesday to check hormones as possibly have some perimenopausal symptoms. Heard nothing back and then came home today to a letter with an appt to see a haematologist at the local hospital. Got a bit of a fright as my dad had leukaemia so the word haematology reminds me of that! I've rang the drs and asked them if they can explain the referral and am waiting for a phone call back. I'm sure it'll be nothing but can't help worrying!

This is very odd indeed. An appointment after only a week would indicate a referral under 2ww, so to rule out cancer. However, if this was the case, you would definitely expect the GP to have seen you or at least talk to you on the phone about it first. If it was a 2ww referral though, it would be more likely that the hospital would call you.

It is an unusual set of circumstances, so I hope you can get a hold of your GP quickly for an explanation.

That's very strange. Speaking as a GP, there's no way I would ever refer someone without telling them first, especially not on a cancer pathway.

If I'd seen something in the bloods that concerned me, I'd have tried to get you in for an appointment the next day to explain it to you, and if that wasn't possible, I'd phone you.

Thanks for your responses. Apparently my white blood cell count is slightly raised, the dr had contacted haematology for advice and they said it wasn't really a concern but I seem to have a referral as a precautionary measure. Still surprised I didn't get a phone call, or to see somebody first, although the GP is off this week so maybe something has been missed. The receptionist who passed the message on said it was all precautionary and not to worry. My appt is the 18th Nov so I'll try and forget about it till then!
