Hello all hope someone can advise. I know people are not doctors but last Wednesday I had terrible sore throat then throat was swollen, runny nose started etc so just a normal cold, now in last few days coughin up yellow phlegm(tmi sorry) and dry cough. All blocked right up, feeling very weak and achy and trouble is I'm asthmatic and have a weak chest anyway. I'm in my 30s and a non smoker. I don't want to waste time at GP tomorrow if this just still sounds viral if anyone can help please ? Thanks much appreciated xx

I'm not an expert, but I don't think you'd be wasting the doctor's time with this, especially given that you're asthmatic, so I would go down there and see what they say.

Are you prone to chest infections? (Asking as I have a daughter who isn't anymore despite being asthmatic) If you are is this following the course for you of a chest infection? Have you got a temperature? (usually a fairly defining feature of an infection requiring treatment). Are you struggling to take a deep breathe without coughing? Do you have other cold like symptoms (would suggest a virus). How ill do you feel? (You're likely room feel much more ill with a chest infection than a cough and cold). Has any of the phlegm got blood in? (Sure sign of infection requiring antibiotics). Are you getting worse or not better despite having had the symptoms for several days? (If yes then you definitely need checking out by the GP)

From what you're saying I agree with the above PP you should go to the GP ASAP to get checked over.

I could have written this post.Got 1000 mg of antibiotics daily and instructions to take an in haler 4 times a day to help with breathing.Never had a chest infection before.
Never felt so dreadful either.Good luck.

Why dont you believe your GP, if he/she has listened to your chest and its clear then you dont have an infection and dont need antibiotics.
If youre short of breath then take your inhaler as instructed (obviously dont know what inhaler your have), decongestants and or chesty chough medicines will help thin the phlegm so you can cough it up.....coughing it up is a good sign, its your bodies way of clearing out the crap, when you cant cough it up is the problem!
We are currently seeing patients with colds that are lasting around 3 weeks so its not a quick one to get over im afraid
