Tonsillitis

This may be a silly question but does anyone know how you get tonsillitis? I know it's meant to be a virus but I've never had it in my life, now I'm nearly 30 and have had it twice in the last 6 months. Is there any reason for it? I'm in total agony and can barely swallow, anyone any good tips for getting rid of it quicker?

Make a docs appointment it's just one of those things you can get my DH been suffering from it since 10(they refuse to remove them!)they'll give you some penicillin for around ten days. He tends to get it when run down hes only once given it to me in eleven years!

Its crazy they wouldn't remove them if hes been getting it all this time, I actually cant believe how painful it is I didn't realise it could be this sore. I've been up pretty much all night!

My daughter had tonsillitis 12 times in a year, and so qualified for having them removed.
However, I had no idea that for an adult this was such a horrific recovery. I’ve never seen someone in so much pain, vomiting, vomiting blood, weight loss etc. It was horrific. My daughter was 17 when she had them removed.
Go to Gp, as if you have white spots at back of throat too, they will give you anti biotics. I think there are five factors. If you have 3, anti biotics will be prescribed. Hope you feel better soon.

It's horrific, I had mine done 15 years ago after becoming immune to the antibiotics.

Get some hydrogen peroxide solution from the chemist, dilute as per instructions, and gargle with it every hour.

It's what I used when I could no longer take antibiotics fir it and it's quicker to work and doesn't mess with your digestive system like antibiotics and it costs around £1.

Op I only had it once as a young teenager, no other time in childhood and then managed to have it twice in 2 months aged 30 same as you! I caught the first one off my son but the 2nd one just came out of nowhere and ended up hospitalising me. I have health anxiety and literally live in fear that it'll come back as like you I had no idea how awful it could be!! I really feel for you, sending hugs. Definitely see a gp and ask for antibiotics as it will clear up much quicker with them than without them. Lots of rest, and difflam throat spray from chemist.

Thanks everyone hoping I can get a GP appointment this morning.

My son had it 3 times as a baby , each time the gp advised it was the bacterial kind and anti biotics cleared it up within days. He was so poorly the first time as we had no idea , we just thought it was a bad cold . After that I knew the signs straight away.
I guess toddlers are more prone to the bacterial kind for putting hands/ toys in their mouth ???
He hasn't had it for years touch wood

Yeh despite him being hospitalised for it as a child spent xmas in hospital they refuse complained and complained to no avail hope you get sorted x

Thanks everyone have 10 days worth of antibiotics and a throat spray so hopefully they kick in soon! Not sure how I'm meant to drink plenty of fluids though when I can barely swallow without wanting to cry!

@Dontforgetyourbrolly that cant have been nice, its horrible having it as an adult never mind a baby having it

He was 11 months the first time, then twice more over the next year. Poor thing .

Miss Rabbit have u tried ice cubes / Ice lollies / Ice cream?

Definitely second pp saying drink through a straw and try to drink/eat soup, yogurt after you've used the spray for maximum ease. The wee bit of food you can get down will give you some energy. So glad you have got 10 day course, that should knock it on the head, you should feel the effects of the antibiotics within 24-48 hrs.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I tried straws & ice cream but still trying to swallow is awful. Have only managed half a glass of water all day so dh is bringing me home so diaralyte because I know myself that isn't enough and I'll need to try to make myself drink!

Hi op, how are you today? Definitely watch out for dehydration. With my 2nd dose of it, I'd been on the antibiotics for 24hrs and was getting worse not better to the point I couldn't swallow any more tablets (antib's or pain relief), then I couldn't swallow my own spit let alone fluid and was having to spit out saliva, that's how I ended up in hospital on iv fluids, steroids and antibiotics.

@Nogodsnomasters I was the same yesterday with not even being able to swallow my saliva, it's horrible isn't it! Thankfully I've managed a bit more water in the last couple of hours, still just small sips but it's a massive difference to yesterday. Hoping the antibiotics start to really work and of day/ tomorrow. Will watch out for dehydration though, thank you

I suddenly developed back to back tonsillitis every month when I started teaching. I tried everything. Gargling with salt or even Aspirin didn't work.
The only thing that really helped me was an Indian remedy called Fatakdi or sometimes called patakri, which you dissolve in warm water with sea salt crystals and gargle several times a day. It's vile. Makes your mouth feel strange.

If you have an Indian food shop nearby, try a pack it's cheap.

Keep an eye on it. 17yo DS got poinsy with his. He was borderline hallucinating.

When I’ve had trouble swallowing, I’ve actually found warm water easier to get over than cold. It’s like the cold gives the back of my mouth a shock & it doesn’t know what to do!
Also, weirdly I found tiny pieces of toast as easy to eat as anything. They fit between your teeth when you can’t open your mouth and you can sort of suck it into submission.

I used to get it when I was run down. Couldn't even swallow my own saliva but did force down soluble cocodamol. It's a horrible thing to be poorly with. Mine were taken out after three occurrences in four months and a hospital admittance due to dehydration. I still get earache when run down now and my glands come up very painfully from time to time. Nowhere near as bad as tonsillitis though.

Still very sore but can manage drinking and had some soup so that's helped massively. Thanks for the suggestions everyone x
