Cannot get drunk on amitriptyline

After being on amitriptyline since February, with my dosage now at 40mg for anxiety and sleep since June, I've found that I cannot get even tipsy, let alone drunk. Being a fresher makes that situation kind of annoying.

I would have the exact same spirit and quantity and it has absolutely no affect. Where before I would usually be more or less over my head kind of drunk, I am completely sober.

Anyone know why this is happening?

Alcohol can and does make anxiety worse??

I thought you weren't mean to drink on them?

BunnyKelly · 13/10/2019 22:39

This was not my experience on it. Absolutely wiped me out with drink.

I was offered this medication for atypical facial pain, and told I would not be able to drink on it. (I chose not to take it in the end.) My consultant said it would really magnify the effects of alcohol, even at the low dose I was offered.

It is perfectly acceptable to be a sober fresher

This isn't meant in a judgmental way, but you should really avoid alcohol when taking amitriptyline. Alcohol plus amitriptyline can be quite toxic.

This is really interesting, I take 30mg for atypical facial pain, have never been told not to drink with it...I dont drink much but it seems to have usual impact, nothing more or less...but maybe my dose is low??
