nits nits everywhere - why aren't they dying???

DD has nits. I used full marks solution on her last thursday night and the next day brushed plenty of big nits out of her hair. It says on the bottle that it kills eggs too, but when I was brushing the eggs out 2 days later there are more live lice (little ones) so I presume they've hatched since the treatment.

She hasn't seen anyone else since treatment and we treated all family members at the same time.

What else can I do. Her hair is so fine (but lots of it) that the nit comb just goes straight through it and I've spent HOURS and HOURS sitting pulling all the little eggs out but there are tons.

Do I need to re-do the full marks thing before the eggs are big enough to lay eggs? and how big do they have to be to lay eggs?

Help me irradicate the cheeky blighters

full marks doesnt work ime. used it on ds and he still had live lice, def left it long enough. i have a nitty gritty comb which is brilliant, dont need chemicals and apparently you can get it on prescrption (google for their website). even if you cant its much cheaper long term

The lice can be immune chemicals.

use condtioner & combing method every 3 days for at least 3 weeks, as this is the life cycle of the louse.

Had a look at that nitty gritty comb, and it looks good, if my GP's hadn't burned down I'd phone and get one prescribed!

With the 3 days combing regime, should it be taking me almost 2 hours each time???

Def get the nitty gritty comb, I've got one and it's really good. My dc's have had nits a few times from school now and that comb is the only one that works with dd as her hair is so fine and lots of it. It does take hours though. I comb then treat hair then comb again and then the next day do another comb to make sure no eggs left at all. Laborious but worthwhile to make sure no more nits. I used the headrin lotion as it works in 10 mins as well and it was fine.

I'll second the nitty gritty although I didn't realise you could get it on prescription and paid £10 for it

DD's had nits on and off for about 6 months. The only thing that I have found works is conditioning and combing with the nitty gritty comb everyday for about week then continuing for with this every 3 days - we do this as a matter of course now.

My dds have quite long and one has thick hair. The conditioner and combing usually takes about 10 mins.

10 mins?! It takes me longer than that to do ds1 and he has short hair but is thick. I do it in small sections to make sure that every egg is out and it doesn't take longer than a couple of days that way. It does take hours to get through every strand of hair and get every last egg out but well worth spending the time then rather than combing every day imo.

10 mins a day everyday for a couple of weeks seems to have done the job. it's very easy with conditioner.

where can u buy the nitty gritty comb??

Boots.

boots sell them most chemists can order them in.

If badly infested I'd do full marks again every 5 days and comb as well with the nitty gritty otherwise the lice run around and are harder to get out.

How long it takes really depends on the thickness of hair I'm afraid!

Just an update to say thanks for the advice girls.

I used full marks one more time and when I looked at her hair as it was drying there were at least 50 lice that had been brought to the surface in an attempt to avoid the nox I guess. So I pciked at her like a mother monkey for an hour or so and got tons out. In the morning they'd all died and I used my regular nit comb to get about another 80 off the blighters out. I thought they must be all gone by now, but I'll by the comb everyone is suggesting.

That comb is fantastic, I got hundreds more of the lice and eggs out of her hair with that. It makes SO much difference compared to the Boots normal comb. I am a convert! In fact I am almost evangelical about it now and perhaps destined to forever spread the word on threads like this.
