The cough after a cold

Just curious to know the answer. Why does it take so much longer to go away than all the other symptoms?

I've had the same. If I get a sore throat before a runny nose it's 99% certain I will get a cough. A pathetic, non productive cough that makes me fear I will wet myself.

I had mine about 3 weeks after the cold and I haven't coughed today.

I used to have tonsilitis a lot as a teenager and I have been told I have a weakness in my pharynx as a result.

The one I have at the minute is awful. Started with a sore throat and then snot, now I'm coughing about every minute Sad

Cough takes longer to go away because the inflammed and sensitive airways need a few weeks to get back to normal after the virus is gone.

BeerandBiscuits that makes sense, that something is actually slightly damaged and has to recover. Whereas the nose just runs.

TroysMammy I had permanent tonsillitis as a child, to the point where they were taken out when I was seven. I'm currently at the early stages of what you describe - start with a (very) sore throat, now running nose and the cough has started. I also have a rash (charming) and I feel like death. Hopefully it won't last too long.

Regarding the rash, hope you don't have strep throat and it's just a viral rash. I had that in 1992 and the rash was the worst part.

I recommend hot ribena, three times a day and a blanket. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Troysmammy thank you. This one is particularly rotten and I'm going stir crazy!
