Low Iron no Anaemia

Mummyofbananas · 03/10/2019 11:31

Does anyone know what this means? I had blood test results and he said i'm not anaemic but my iron levels were non detectable, he said low would be about 10 and mine weren't showing at all.

I assumed low iron was anaemia? I've been given iron but is there anything else I could be doing? Been feeling awful for a while now, tired, sore and depressed xx [#

Did you have any other blood tests OP? Vitamin B12 or folate? I think that being deficient in those can mask iron anaemia. Also, it takes a while for anaemia to affect your blood cells. If you've only recently become so low in iron it may not be showing at a cellular level yet. Have you had a big bleed/childbirth or anything?

Thanks for your reply :) My folate and b12 were normal I believe. I have started feeling quite a lot worse in the last week or 2 so I wonder if I would show as anaemic if I had a blood test now.

I've not but I've been either pregnant or breastfeeding for the last 6 years so I'm guessing that depletes iron levels. X

Is low iron the same as low ferritin or is that different?

How would I get a copy of my blood test results?xxxx

It’s probably low ferritin. The normal range is 15-250. Your Hb (haemoglobin) level is probably still in normal range. Is your surgery signed up to Patient Access? If so, ask for a login and see if they have your results on your account. Failing that, book an appointment and simply ask!

Thanks, if it's non detectable does that mean no iron stores? I've got iron tablets now and bought mince to prep some meals haha x
