How long for a cold to go?

I don't really get colds, and if I do it's a bit of a sniffle and gone.

But I seem to have caught this ripsnorter of a cold, with a bunged up/drippy nose. I can't breathe through my mouth when I'm asleep, so I'm using Sudofed to clear my nose at night. Started feeling crappy on Saturday afternoon - how long does anyone reckon before I can look down without my nose running all over whatever I'm looking at, and how long before I stop feeling crappy?

I woke up yesterday morning with a razor blade throat and a throbbing head.
Dh has had it for a week so far.
By this morning I've had so much snot I'm literally carrying a loo roll everywhere yet I'm bunged up at the same time.
Put myself to bed at 7pm after dragging myself through the day Hmm

Feel like absolute poo.

I've now taken the night time cold and flu capsules alongside ibuprofen in the hope il get a bit of sleep

3 days coming, 3 days with you, 3 days to go.

That seems to be my usual experience for a common cold (rhinovirus).

Flu tends to have a sudden onset and can last for weeks.

Zaphodsotherhead · 30/09/2019 20:12

Never felt this one coming at all, Speckle, although a lot of my team at work have had it. I thought I'd got away with it!

So, tomorrow will be my third day 'with it', and I should be feeling better by Wednesday... I do hope so. The amount of snot is quite impressive.

Feel better soon @Marblesgoing. Sympathy to you.

That’s been my experience currently! Simmering last week, full-blown head cold Fri-Sun (taking cold/flu capsules & echinacea) & subsiding today.

I think though that different people have different susceptibilities, even with what seems likely to be the same cold Confused

Two weeks if you treat it, 14 days if you don't.

I find a neti pot better than decongestants. Such a wonderful feeling of relief, and non of the spaceyness! Don't bother with the fancy mixes, just use 50/50 sea salt and bicarbonate of soda.

Zaphodsotherhead · 30/09/2019 20:33

Neti pot no use overnight though, LibraryMiss. I need to be unbunged in order to get a good night's sleep, and they don't really make me spacy. But I can blow and blow and just instantly bung right back up again without.

I know colds are just a minor inconvenience and nobody really takes them seriously, but they are a bloody horrible thing, and you get no sympathy!

I hate catching a cold, for me it lasts bloody weeks 😡. One week with nose and eyes streaming, second week totally bunged up and cant breathe and then it gets to my chest and cough hangs around for a fortnight.
Day nurse capsules are about the best I've found.

marblesgoing · 01/10/2019 23:09

Well 24 hours after my last post.

Went to bed last night eyes and nose streaming.
Was awake most of the night and have woken up this morning with a really heavy chest and cough however my nose isn't running so much now Hmm

Dosed ip on meds again all day at work but just feel crap

Tortoiser · 01/10/2019 23:11

I’m currently about 4 weeks in and it’s literally doing my head in. I still have a runny nose and a dry throat. It’s ridiculous.

Zaphodsotherhead · 02/10/2019 10:11

I've lost the intial real streaming stuff, now on day five. Still feel woolly headed a bit and have snot, and my glands are still swollen. Bit of a cough, so hoping its not making its way downwards - I did manage a five mile run yesterday which seemed to help.

Back to work today though. Better arm up with tissues. Thanks to all for keeping my company in my cold journey...
