Dog Bite

I have a dog bite on my little finger around the top joint, I have cleaned it and put a plaster on. Do I need to do anything else tonight or just keep an eye out for any signs of infection? I am up to date with tetanus. Thank you

How bad iss it? as a genral rule you should seek medical attention with an animail bite unless very minor and on a hand more so so unless its a scratch. you need to see you gp tommrow at latest. Did you also engourage it to bleed?

Evenstar · 23/09/2019 19:47

I did let it bleed, it doesn’t seem deep it was a single tooth nip from a very small dog as I broke up a fight. There is a small flap of skin loose and I cleaned it throughly with wound wash.

Hi, if there is any chance the bite has reached deeper structures or bone then you will need to be seen for antibiotics and a washout.

If it broke the skin it needs antibiotics, sorry. There's a vast amount of bacteria in a dogs mouth. See your GP tomorrow.

Am on my own this evening but managed to get a picture, bleeding again now I have uncovered it

If that isa triangular flap of skin then definately needs seen. I see small dog bites every day at work, it won't be seen as trivial

Yes it is a flap, I will phone the surgery in the morning and see if I can get an appointment, though I probably stand more chance of winning the Euromillions jackpot 😭 Thanks everyone

Can you get yourself to a minor injury unit? - especially if can't see GP

nilcarborundum · 23/09/2019 20:43

Be very careful! I ended up in hospital on IV antibiotics after my little dog nipped me by mistake, and I'd seen the doctor straight away. Practice nurse cleaned and dressed it for me, but the next day I had red spreading up to my wrist and the day after it was up to my elbow. It took several different antibiotics to stop it too , so I'd definitely keep an eye on it!

A and E would be my only option round here tonight, no minor injuries or walk ins within less than a 40 minute drive. It is a huge bugbear of mine we live in a highly populated area in the south east and there is nothing at night other than out of hours accessible only via 111 and could be anything up to a 2-3 hour wait for a call back, or A and E. Happy to do that if necessary, I genuinely didn’t think it was that serious or urgent
