Facet joint/access to work

I have facet joint arthritis which means I find it difficult to stand or sit for long periods of time. Sitting needs to be in a good supportive chair. I asked for a OH assessment for equipment which was done about 6 weeks ago - she made recommendations for equipment. I work for a local authority and the HR are inefficient and very slow.
HR have only just advised my line manager that I will need to contact access to work for them to make an assessment before any equipment will be agreed or purchased. It was only because I chased it that I got told this so I did a self referral on Tuesday.
In the meantime my back pain at work is getting worse and worse to the point that on Monday I hardly slept as a result.
I am trying so hard to stay at work and get the adjustments that I need to do mt job but they keep putting obstacles in the way .
I feel like just going to my doctor and asking to be signed off until it is sorted.
Feeling very very fed up
Any advice?
