Toddler complaining about tongue hurting

My 2.3 yr old ds has been unable to eat much today and has been complaining about his tongue and gum at the front of his mouth hurting.
I've tried to have a look and I think he appears to have a blister type thing at the back of his upper lip with a white top.
I'm not 100% sure but I think his tongue appears to be whiter than normal.
I was wondering if this could be thrush?
He's not breast fed anymore but he does suck his thumb a lot.
Anyone help?

If his tongue is white it could well be thrush, it's a simple oral medication to get rid, so see your GP to be sure, as for the blister thing, I thought straightaway an ulcer???? Only way to be sure is for someone to see it......

Could be hand,foot and mouth.
Look for small blister looking spots on the palms and soles. Also can be around nappy area.

Thanks 3d. I'm planning to ring the gp tomorrow morning to get an emergency appointment but just wondered if anyone had any experience in the mean time.
All the stuff I read on nhs direct and other websites seemed to imply that only breast fed young babies are prone to oral thrush (as far as children are concerned anyway).
I guess it could be an ulcer and the whiteness is in my head!

Nothing in the nappy area and I'm sure his feet are ok but not checked palms.
Have never heard of hand, foot and mouth!

Hi my dd1 had hand foot and mouth very badly last summer.
The blister you describe with the whiteness does sound like the blisters that dd had on her tongue and mouth.
dd had a few faint pink under the skin type spots on her hands and feet too.

My DD2 only had the spots in her mouth.DD1 had lots. her mouth was really sore for a few days.Painful to eat or drink.
No treatment.Just calpol for the pain.

thrush thrives in moist conditions and I'm sure that thumb sucking would constitute to that.

mine had hand foot and mouth, doc said viral but hv knew that it was. They didnt have blisters just pink spots on arms and legs and sore mouth. Igot it a week later but no spots just sore blistered mouth, I felt so ill with it and then understood why the kids had benn so moaney

Ds was a bit unwell on Tuesday and does appear to have a sore throat too. His voice is very croaky and obviously, he has his sore mouth so I guess it could be hand, foot and mouth.
I'm a bit worried now as I've just read that it can cause complications for pregnant women - I'm 31 weeks.
Oh well, hopefully will find out at drs tomorrow.

My ds1 had hand foot and mouth 2 weeks ago and didn't eat anything for nearly 5 days as his mouth was so sore.He had blisters/ulcers covering his tongue,lips and on the insides of his cheeks.Finally after a few days the doctor gave him some antibiotics which were great and cleared it all up.Apparently,it's "doing the rounds" at the moment,according to my gp.

not read all posts but my dd is allergic to pineapple and kiwi which makes her tongue very sore and blotchy. has he had any of those?

The Dr confirmed it was thrush and I've got some gel stuff to spread around his mouth.
I'm relieved its thrush rather than hand, foot and mouth as it seems the lesser of the two evils.
