Hands shaking dreadfully, weakness and need to lie down?

Hi all. I've been suffering from this for a few months - it doesn't happen very often, maybe once every few weeks. All of a sudden I feel like this and just need to lie down. Tonight I thought I must be getting ill and coming down with something.

I'm not a big eater, I eat to live. Today I barely had anything - I'm much more of a 'nibbler', don't really do well with normal meals. All I had was a few fish fingers and some rice and coleslaw - only ate about a quarter of the plate. Then had some Lindt balls, that was it.

So in 8 hours that was all I had. Then suddenly started feeling this way, lay down on my bed, had a banana and water and feel fine now.

But my question is, if it's due to low blood sugar/hunger then why did I not actually feel hungry/the need to eat? That's what doesn't make sense to me.

I am planning going to the doctors, been putting it off because it's not been happening that much but it's concerning for me, not a very nice feeling.

I've just taken my blood pressure. It was about 90/80, taken manually so hopefully accurate enough.

Aged 20, 46kg if relevant.

You are probably used to ignoring hunger and therefore not feeling it.

Squashpocket · 14/09/2019 21:48

Have you ever felt hunger or is this just a recent thing?

Nemesia · 14/09/2019 21:49

I suspect you are also lacking in minerals if you don't eat much. Magnesium, zinc, potassium will all be low and could cause there symptoms. Maybe lack of b vitamins too. The banana would have helped a bit.

I have felt hunger, but usually after not eating for quite a long time.. god that sounds quite bad doesn't it!
I should point out though that I'm not like this while working or 'out', I do get hungry.

Today is my first day off so I've been having a lazy day at home not doing much. I usually eat quite little on these days, I assume due to my body not using up much energy therefore not feeling the need to eat.

That is quite a strange bp reading so could be to do with that. But that could be caused by the not eating. Dr will sort you out.

donkir · 14/09/2019 21:59

You're just over 7 stone which is probably severely underweight. Please go to the doctor. Your body isn't telling you it's hungry because it's probably got used to not eating.

Wolfiefan · 14/09/2019 22:02

You weigh less than my dog OP and that BP needs addressing too. You need to see a GP. The feeling unwell could be a simple fix. Is it worth keeping a food/activity diary and noting down when these episodes occur?

asblackasyoursoul · 14/09/2019 22:02

donkir, Thank you for the concern but I should've mentioned I'm only 5'0 tall, I am 'slim' but really not mega skinny or in a dangerous way!

Low blood sugar or low blood pressure

TooMinty · 14/09/2019 22:12

I'm 5'0. At 7st 2lb I look a bit skeletal and people express concern. 7st 7lb is more like a healthy weight. If I'm stressed or tired I don't feel hungry and forget to eat or just nibble and give up. That's how I went down to 7st 2lb - new baby, breastfeeding, no sleep, forgot to eat. Are you tired/stressed? Don't over face yourself with food, a massive plateful can be intimidating. But do try to eat at every mealtime and have full fat versions of everything.

YeOldeTrout · 15/09/2019 09:07

I hope OP isn't being disingenuous.
Low blood sugar obviously is bad for you.
Try to eat something small at least 6x a day max. every 3 hrs while awake.

Do you have a blood pressure machine at home? Why? Else how does one manually take BP at home?

asblackasyoursoul · 19/09/2019 07:57

@YeOldeTrout, I’m a student nurse so I know how to take my blood pressure manually. Not being disingenuous.

If you are a student nurse can you take your BM when you feel like this? If you are already tiny and you have whole days where you don’t eat properly then it may be your blood sugar. Either way you know you should be eating properly; your BMI is already at the bottom end of the scale. Start meal planning: when I got like this (stress related) I had a rule that I must make and drink a substantial smoothie every day and eat one thing that could be classified as a proper meal, even if it wasn’t a huge plateful. Find something that works for you.

hopeishere · 19/09/2019 08:24

I would very occasionally get this if I've not eaten properly and I wouldn't feel "hungry" but I just know I need to get something sweet in me ASAP!!

As a student nurse j think you're being a bit silly - you must know people need to eat regularly and not "nibble".

Have you ever had an eating disorder?
