Thrush treatment isn't working!!!

So for about 10/12 days I've had a burning sensation. I took an oral tablet last weekend...nada. Went to the GP on Wednesday to rule out a uti - sample was clear. She examined me externally and said I'm quite red and that the burning when weeing is quite classic thrush. Said to try another oral tablet (I've reacted to internal treatments before). As I only took the last one at the weekend I was worried to take another so quickly but will do so today. But good god - the burn. Could it be anything else? I feel like I've had this before but the tablet treated it.

Anyone?!

Did they take swabs? Might not be thrush if the tablet isn't working

Theoverstretchedmultitasker · 13/09/2019 19:07

When I had recurrent thrush I tried the OTC tablet to no avail. The GP prescribed ointment (Daktacort I think) and a 7-day oral course of antifungal tablets, which finally nuked it. Your partner may need treating as well and you should avoid intercourse until you've fully recovered.

No, no swabs. The last time this happened (June, I think), swabs were taken which were negative. I don't know what to do with myself. Doesn't help my period is due any minute. So as well as the god awful burn, I now ache down below too. Being a woman is fantastic.

Try the doctor again . They might have it wrong .

Just wanted to sympathise . It sounds terrible and hope it gets better soon .

Online search says diabetes is a common cause of thrush . Has your doctor looked at potential underlying causes of the thrush .

minesadecaf · 13/09/2019 20:33

Thanks @Gollyfot I know this is so trivial compared to what millions have to go through with serious illness (my dad included) but god it's bugging me! I'll give it a few days to see if today's tablet helps otherwise I'll try the GP again.

I had stubborn thrush once. Nothing worked. Ended up getting the burning too, was convinced it was an std or diabetes. Went to GUM clinic and got given a one dose pill, can’t remember what it is called sorry! But that one little tablet cleared it up completely within a day or two. If I get another bout that doesn’t respond I’ll always go to the clinic now

nearlynermal · 13/09/2019 20:37

If it is thrush, what worked for me was getting DP to take the medication and use the cream in order to stop reinfection, then I moved from canestan to Balance Activ BV pessaries. If you don't react well to internal treatments I'm not sure if they're for you, but they were a game changer for me.

mumofone234 · 13/09/2019 20:39

I had recurrent thrush and the doctor put me on a course of multiple treatments back to back. Essentially, loads of pessaries in one go. Perhaps ask them about that if no joy soon? In the meantime, have you tried coconut oil? I doubt it actually fixes the problem but I found it quite soothing and it is antimocrobial (or something like that!) which can’t do any harm.

mumofone234 · 13/09/2019 20:40

Antimicrobial! Stupid phone.

Youngandfree · 13/09/2019 20:40

I went to the doctor today for the same thing Sad she prescribed exactly the same as @Theoverstretchedmultitasker and I have to say I’m feeling a bit of relief already!! It might be worth asking for that cream! She also took swabs so maybe go back and ask for that to be done! Funnily enough I needed bloods done for my thyroxine so she did bloods for diabetes too!! €60 a pop to see a doctor here so they tend to cover all bases in a visit!! Also natural yogurt is supposed to be helpful I think??

StressyDressyHeels · 13/09/2019 20:44

Do get a swab done to make sure it is thrush. The GP can prescribe something else.

I have done pessaries 3x 48 hours apart before which has shifted a bad bout.

I have suffered with recurrent thrush and strangely find coffee/alcohol and sugary things set it off. Sometimes I’ll feel the discomfort starting and realise it’s because I’ve been drinking.

I've been with my husband 8 years and rarely dtd so I'd be shocked if it was anything std like. I had a GUM MOT a few years ago and all clear. I've tried sudocrem, it kind of helps but not really. The burn is worst first thing in the morning weirdly.

@minesadecaf I said the exact same to the doctor today Shock worst first thing in the morning 😫 I hope it clears up soon!!

Youmadorwhat · 13/09/2019 21:15

Pressed send to early. My doc gave me the cream and tablet duo. Funnily enough he said sudocream has too much zinc??

minesadecaf · 13/09/2019 21:15

Oo what did the GP advise @Youmadorwhat? I figured it's because urine becomes more acidic the longer you don't wee overnight so it burns the sore bit more? 🤔

May be worth a visit to the sexual health clinic if you've not done so already

Undi · 07/05/2020 10:14

Have you found a cure? I am having same problem. Any advice would be appreciated.
