Broken veins in babies? - advice please!

My second baby is 8 weeks old and I have noticed some tiny little bruises on his skin, which look a little like broken veins or something - he is NOT ill and they have come and gone since he was about a week old - first one on his head, under his hair, that looked a bit like I'd made a pen mark on him - like a biro line, about half an inch long. It's gone now but lasted a few days.

Yesterday I noticed a tiny line about 3-4mm long on his arm, and this morning he has another on his ankle, (do babies have ankles !) which is the same size.

As I said, well my first thoughts were to panic slightly as it doesn't disappear under pressure, and not in places where he's likely to have bumped himself.

But he is perfectly well and happy and gurgling away, so I'm wondering if it is something anyone else has ever noticed on their baby, and secondly, if it could be a sign of poor clotting etc.?

No idea but you lot must know something!!

Try to upload pictures on profile in a minute x

I am sure that someone more knowledgeable than me will come along shortly, but I have noticed this with babies and todlers. I think DS1 had a noticable vein on his head when he was small but it just went away, and as I had friends who had observed the same thing in their children I never worried about it - particularly prevalent in very fair children. I am sure it is nothing to worry about but for your peace of mind you can mention it to your GP or HV next time you see them. HTH Sim

Oh thanks Sim, that's put my mind at rest - his dad was very fair so I think that must be to do with it!

Could it be a strawberry birthmark? dd2 has 2 which I noticed at around 6 weeks, they looked like a bunch of broken veins at first but not a single line though. My GP was very re-assuring about them though, apparently they fade before the age of 7.

Oh God! Just looked at that link, Leati - thank god, not like that. I have put a couple of pics on my profile. He is well and happy and as Kamikayzed says it would have progressed if it were something nasty - hopefully she's right!

He only has a couple, will keep an eye in case...Kami, that must have been such a horrible scare for you, I'm really glad your little one was alright - it's funny as Ds doesn't scream a lot at all, he's more of a grumbler really, so I doubt it's that - but I shan't worry too much.

I might take your suggestion of getting bloods checked though as we are due at GP tomorrow anyway for his vaccines.

Thanks so much for replying!

Prof, thankyou, I'll watch them and see what they do I think they are the same as the one on his little head, which has now vanished.
