Low blood pressure and irregular heartbeat

Hi, I've been aware of this for some time but never mentioned it to a Dr. I'm 39 and over the past few years have been getting increasingly tired. Not just tired - exhausted. I crash and feel a great urge to just sleep in the daytime.
I have three children, am separated and I work but I don't feel stressed or depressed (I have in the past). I'm pretty happy and content tbh.
I had mentioned a couple of years ago at a visit to the GP (for something else) my tiredness. I think my thyroid was tested and a few other things which came back OK.
I then started taking some BP measurements and heart rate just out of interest.
I found my blood pressure to be low - much to my surprise. More often than not below 100/60
I was also having some palpitations when lying down but didn't take much notice at the time and thought they'd just blow over.
I have an Omron monitor and another BP machine which showed often an irregular heartbeat.
Anyway, I moved house a few months ago so forgot about it but the tiredness continued. It's become worse recently. By 10am I feel shattered even after 8 hours sleep.
So I decided to check again. Once again monitors are recording low blood pressure 98/57 and 85/64 (not hugely low I know but..) and irregular HB symbol flashing again. Took pulse too but that seems all over the place. At times 100 then dropping to under 60 in a couple of minutes. I can feel it too when I put fingers on pulse.

So, I am wondering a) if these monitors are reliable and b) if my tiredness could possibly be linked to low blood pressure.

Book to see a GP particularly for irregular heartbeat. They will be able to help you.

Get your b12 levels checked too, deficiency in that can give you erratic heartbeats plus bone-crushing tiredness that isn't relieved by a full nights sleep. Any breathlessness, weird nerve sensations/tingling/numbness?

NanTheWiser · 12/08/2019 11:56

Many of those symptoms are typical of atrial fibrillation, so do see your GP.

Hi and thanks Brilly and Nan. Yes, sometimes breathless walking especially uphill. At times legs have gone to jelly after walking a steep hill but I put that down to DVT I had about 9 years ago. I still get cramps in the same leg at night. Not really numbness though.
I often yawn persistently and can't stop - it's been a joke at work sometimes. I don't know if this is related to just feeling tired.

Is AFib related to clotting of the veins at all? I understand it can lead to clotting in arteries but what about veins?
The reason I ask is I had a DVT after my first child (after 2/3 months) but there wasn't really any apparent cause and never investigated further.

OP, I have a friend with Afib, (she is 70 BTW), and was diagnosed a few years ago, although she knew she had irregular heart beats long before that. She is now on meds for it, but one of her symptoms has been breathlessness, especially going up stairs or up hill, and it is one of the symptoms caused by Afib.
I don't know if it has anything to do with a DVT, but it IS a stroke risk, so I think an appt. with your GP is required.

poloarpanda123 · 12/08/2019 19:59

Ok Nan, I shall reluctantly make one. Flowers

Breathlessness, sighing etc are symptoms of b12 deficiency too which needs to be treated if you have it, so glad you are making an appt, however reluctant!

Hi, I've not been able to get appointment for very soon but I did some monitoring last night of my BP and HR because I am sure it will all look normal when I visit the Gp and it will be dismissed.
This is happening at short intervals so I have to try and catch it.
Last night whilst just sitting and reading my HR dropped to 37 at it's lowest and I got a bit scared. I checked with a different device and it read the same (oxymeter) . It then spiked up to 80 and it was OK then for a long time.
I have taken some pictures and recorded on my monitor so I can hopefully show the Dr.
My BP monitor (Omron) also showed irregular HB several times.
It's seems the the diastolic number always seems to be a bit low. Hanging around 54/55.
Does this make any sense to anyone?!

Hopefully, your GP will refer you for a Holter monitor (24 or 48 hour) to check it out. If it is Afib, it should catch any suspect readings, as it can be quite random sometimes. Good idea to show the GP your readings, as they should guide him/her as to the best pathway to take.
Good luck!

I would request full blood count and include complete iron studies. Vitamin B group also important. Suspect your iron is low. You may have a bleed from somewhere. Do you have symptoms of gastric reflux? Drink too much alcohol? Did you have a c-section? Do you have heavy periods? Do you eat enough protein and veggies and do you drink enough water?

poloarpanda123 · 15/08/2019 12:49

Thanks so much both. I don't drink nowadays at all. Periods not too heavy and but I defo could drink more water tbh. No C section, 3 normal births though 2 x on heparin during pregnancy.
Only medical history really is Malaria (seriously ill some years ago) and this DVT (also some years ago ).

Els82 · 12/02/2025 16:17

@poloarpanda123 I know this post is very old but did you ever get to the bottom of your issues? I'm having the same problems

@poloarpanda123 I know your post is old but did you ever figure out what caused this?
