Type 1 Herpes virus

Hi all, I've had a very small cluster of blisters (probably about 3 or 4 blisters) that have been quite sore so I went to the local GUM clinic and they swabbed it and it has come back as type 1 herpes. I have early googled my fingers off but am i right in thinking it's only type 2 that is sexually transmitted. I'm on aciclovir and putting lidocaine on there so it should be gone in a couple of days but what other impact does type 1 herpes have? it's usually the strain that cold sore sufferers have, so should I treat it as such? Was given no other info as they just said it was type 1, Ive had the appropriate treatment and that was that. Anyone?

I believe you can get type 1 herpes on your fanjo, if you've had oral sex with someone who gets cold sores, or if you've had sex with someone who also has type 1 herpes on their genitals.

I am a consultant dermatologist. The old distinction between Type 1 above the waist (ie cold sore) and Type 2 below the waste (ie genital) no longer applies. Either type can be at either site - and even other body sites. If the symptoms are fairly mild then intermittent aciclovir cream or tablets will help. If the symptoms are severe or ver frequent, I usually give 6-12 months of preventative aciclovir.
