Acne coming back after roaccutane

Dd (16) was taking roaccutane from October last year to April. She tolerated it really well with minimal side effects and about halfway through her treatment, her spots completely cleared up. Her skin stayed completely clear for two months after she stopped taking the tablets but now the acne’s started coming back ... where do we go from here?

She started getting spots at 10 which gradually got worse when she started secondary school. Her acne was never really severe but it didn’t respond to topical treatments, antibiotics or going on the pill and it affected her self-confidence badly. Eventually the GP said she’d run out of options and referred dd to a dermatologist who was lovely and agreed that dd met the criteria for roaccutane.

Dd’s getting upset by the state of her skin and has made an appointment to see the GP but as it’s not urgent that’s not until the end of August. What’s likely to be her next option?

I had to take Roaccutane twice to resolve everything. I was older than your DD but had suffered for years.

After the second time I now (20 years on) get an occasional spot but normally my skin is pretty good.

Wishing you both all the best. It is a tough one.

Thanks Sharpkat - how long did you have in between the courses of roaccutane?

I think it was a couple of years but had my first course in 1999 so it is a distant memory. Both courses would have been in a three year period overall.
