a few weeks ago i woke up in the night, it felt like someone had stabbed me, its where my bra strap goes on one side, thought i may have pulled a muscle but its not going away.
my GP puts it down to being 30wks pg, but i don't think its that, as i get lower back pain sometimes and its different. there are no marks there and it hurts whether i wear a bra or not.
any idea's?

Does it hurt if you take a deep breath in?

is the pain constant or intermittent?

What aggravates and eases it?

(physio inquisition commences)

j20baby · 31/07/2007 21:53

doesn't hurt when i take a deep breath.

i can get into certain positions where i don't feel it, but as soon as i move it comes back, moving about aggrevates it and gentle rubbing helps eases it(but dd gets fed up )

Do you have big boobs....and have they got bigger?

Sorry if that sounds v personal but I treated a lady with ginormous boobs towrds the end of her pregnancy. She had classic thoracic spine pain caused by the weight of her boobs, as they got bigger with the pregnancy, so did her pain. When she had the baby and when her boobs came back to their normal size the pain went (Oh and I was able to lie her flat on her stomach and get to work on her back)

yes and yes

my friend said it could be that, but would it only be on one side and isn't there anything i can do?

Well in terms of pain relief now you have paracetamol and a heat pad (hot water bottle wrapped up in towel), and ? a DH/DP to give the tender area a massage.

Also positions of comfort, lying on your side (pain side uppermost), or leaned forward over back of chair onto a pillow.

If pain gets worse I would ask GP for a ref to a physio. You can have manual therapy on your spine (even with bump) in the forward leaning position. And a physio will do a full Ax and give you some exercises.

j20baby - do you suffer with indegestion? The reason i ask is that, this could be just that, or it could be gallstones rearing their ugly head. I suffered with this and i would often get upper back pain that you described. They tend to come with stomach pain to, just under the left rib, but my doc said that they can give weird symptoms too. It could actually be indegestion, had you ate fatty food before the pain came on. If it is constant then i dont think it would be g s but it might be worth mentioning. GS are fecking painful but easy to fix, but can often be exacerbated by pregnancy. Hope you feel better soon.

thank you very much, i did wonder if its because i carry my handbag accross my chest with the strap on the other side (if you see what i mean) so i'm going to try and get a more comfortable one, and will see my GP again.

lucy -indigestion is the one thing that i haven't suffered much with while pg so i don't think its that, but i did once have a stomach ulcer-is this similar? i haven't had any associated pain with it.

No worries. As the pain is aggravated by movement and eases with rest/massage it does sound musculoskeletal. Your GP will be able to differentiate between m/s pain and referred gastro pain.

You may have to wear a fetching rucksack for the rest of your pregnancy and ditch the hand bag

j20baby · 31/07/2007 22:18

oh goodie

Could possibly be gallstones.
