Mosquito bites and Cellulitis

Hi

My daughter (17) has a 7 inch round mosquito bite on her leg and a smaller 3 inch on her forearm.

Been to the GP and have antibiotics as it's cellulitis.

She's had 2 antibiotics tablets so far and the leg bite is looking slightly less red but the arm one is more swollen and much redder and another 2cm bigger.

How long do antibiotics take to kick in for bites? Does anyone know?

Thank you x

Cellulitis can be serious (I've had it) so you're doing right to keep an eye out. The best thing you can do is draw around the swelling/infection and monitor it. If it ends up outside of the line by the end of the day you need to go back to the doctor to try a different antibiotic.

Thank you, the arm one has grown by 2 cm overnight, so I am a little concerned.

I will draw around it xx

Did she start the AB yesterday? If so I'd go back to the docs now, 2cm is a lot. It's just not worth the risk. Is she running a temperature or anything?

Hi

Yes, she started them last night, actually, I made a mistake, she's had 3 tablets now.

She's stupidly sitting in the sun.

Her temperature is 37.5 in one ear and 37.1 in the other.

Why on earth would be massive leg one look better but the arm one much worse?

I've no idea! Maybe one's a bit more virulent than the other?!

Hi

I've just taken her to the pharmacy and the pharmacist said she has never seen a bite so big but if it's still growing tomorrow morning, to go back to the GP. She said we have to wait for the antibiotics to reach a certain level in her body to start working properly. Apparently the antibiotics are very strong and should kick in soon.

xx
