Pelvic ultrasound

Need a pelvic ultrasound this week for spotting, sudden changes in cycle, one sided pelvic pain, and swelling in the abdomen. Can anyone tell me what to expect? If they see anything "wrong" might they give me a clue eg tell me they are making a urgent referral? Or tell me to make a sooner appt with my GP than the one I have to review in 2 weeks?

Also if everything looks fine will they probably just do the external scan and not bother with the transvaginal one? Or will they do both just to check everything? I'm very anxious about the whole thing!

I had one last year. Almost wet myself beforehand as had to have a full bladder and the appointment was 30 minutes late.
The nurse did the normal ultrasound and also the vaginal one and told me she could see no issues at all. Whole thing took about 5 mins. If they see anything they will probably send the findings to your GP straight away and your GP will contact you to make an appointment or tell you over the phone. The nurse might tell you if she sees something that isn’t sinister like a cyst or fibroid.

That's reassuring that it might be fast! I'm getting some bladder pressure anyway without the added pint of water they want me to hold for the procedure plus waiting time

I can't answer all your questions but I've had two pelvic ultrasounds for gynae symptoms, both involved internal as well as external. One of them was abroad and midwife specifically requested an internal (I wasn't pregnant fyi) although they did external first. They told me the findings there and then. The other one was in the UK as a follow up by my GP some months later and I was advised that I may need an internal and it would be at the clinical discretion of the scanner. The scanner did external and said would need internal for clearer picture. He wouldn't tell me anything about the results at all and said their procedure is to write to your GP and it has to be the GP who updates me.
