GGT levels

I have routine blood tests every month or so as I have other health issues and my ALP levels are always high. I have just had GGT level checked as haven't had that done for many years and it was 40. At my hospital the normal level shows as 5-55 but upon googling I understand that it is different for men and women. Would you say this was too high for a woman. I do drink wine on a weekend and am now concerned. TIA

Reference range for gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) varies among hospital trusts. For example it's 1-78 U/L for men and 1-54 U/L for women in South Tees but 10-60 U/L for men and 5-40 U/L for women in Exeter. Either way, yours isn't particularly high. I presume you have a bone condition that means you need to have alkaline phosphatase (ALP) monitored. GGT is used to check whether raised ALP is due to a bone or a liver problem.

GGT isn't very useful for diagnosing liver disease, though. The problem with alcohol and GGT is that alcohol increases the production of the enzyme, so a level up to twice the upper end of the normal range might be due to more enzyme being produced rather than liver cells being damaged. It is also increased by paracetamol, some antidepressants and quite a few other prescription drugs.

I have kidney problems which means other tests including bone and liver chemistry are checked. ALP has been high for quite a long time and hadn't been mentioned but doctor checked GGT aswell to see if it was one of my other medications that was affecting it. Haven't heard anything from hospital so maybe they are okay with that figure, must admit I will probably be worrying till next appointment though

I know this is a really old post but did you ever get an answer as to why the GGT was a tad high OP?
Going through similar currently. GGT has come back at 35 and normal range is 5-36.
