Finally got varifocals BUT

I have only worn my glasses for distance/driving and not in the house/inside for a while as they weren't comfortable inside. At a recent eye test I mentioned that I would be going back to uni and the optician asked if I would be in lectures ie needing to look from a large screen to my books/laptop and I said yes.

He tested my reading vision and it was improved with a lens he tried so suggested varifocals as my vision will deteriorate further in the next two years. (They suggested this 2 years ago but as I was happy just to take them off when inside they said not to bother). I have been trying the varifocals and I understand they take a while to get used to but the reading section is actually slightly less sharp than when I don't have them on . Do I need to give it more time, I've only been trying them for a few days, or should I be able to see clearly at the reading section?

Your close vision should be clear.

You definitely should be able to see to read clearly and sharply.

It could be because you have got used to holding your book/reading matter in a slightly non typical position to compensate for your previous glasses. Have you tried moving the book around a bit to see if there is a place in which it is sharp j- and is that then a comfortable reading position. If not I'd definitely go back

Thank you, I will try for another couple of days as I won't be near the opticians anyway. It actually feels as if there might not be a reading lens part, iykwim or it could just be the colour of the lens because if I am reading something with a white page, then without the glasses it is white, with the glasses it seems slightly less white.

How do they know your eyesight will deteriorate in the next 2 years? A few years ago my eyesight actually improved. I have varifocals and had no trouble adjusting but my optician did say they are a compromise for reading, I find the print is clearer for reading without my glasses.

My varifocals took two weeks to work properly - ie for my brain to stop trying to over process images and accept the new regime. Once the computers in my office had stopped jumping up and down and the steps had stayed where they were, things got easier including being able to read better.

Poppy I think he is just working on the that they have got incrementally worse over the past 10 years but of course they might stay the same.

I think part of the problem is that I am used to not wearing glasses at home that my brain needs to get around that.
