URGENT QUESTION re breastfeeding with D&V

9mo with mild D&V - may get worse, of course - and off solids. Does he need water as well, or will bm keep him adequately hydrated?

I'd rather avoid giving him water unless it's necessary, as he has a tendency to throw up water at the best of times.

bm should suffice

belgo · 26/07/2007 12:32

breast milk is the best as it is easily digestable and contains the nutrients that he will be losing with the d&v

bm is the best thing ever for him when he is ill and he will be fine without any extra water
hope he feels better soon

lots of breast milk as it is completly sterile. Feeding will soothe him as well

carry on breast feeding best for him
Just keep an eye to see if he's weeing regularly ( know its difficult when diarrhoea)
check mouth tongue are moist - just checking for signs of dehydration
if you want to give water - try a little from a cup or spoon, so as not to confuse him with teat.

He's not even kept breastmilk down terribly well this afternoon. But, apart from just before a vomit, he's very much himself - cheerful and curious, maybe a touch clingier than usual.
