Mole removed- awaiting results

Family member had a mole removed last week. She went in to see the dermatologist on an urgent referral and they insisted the mole be removed that very morning and sent her to theatre. Apparently the mole was very deep - she thought over 1cm (they showed her). Is this likely to be something sinister? Does the depth mean it's more likely to be melanoma?

I'm not a medic of any kind. The urgency would suggest that it looked worrying to the doctors who saw it. The biopsy will show whether it's still worrying. Or not - and there's still a good chance of that.
