Tonsillectomy Aftermath

I've just recently had my tonsils and adenoids taken out, due to constant tonsillitis. I regret my decision so much right now because the pain is unbearable. My threshold is already pretty low. Is there any best throat spray / liquid that can help with the pain? I've been using difflam but the pain is still severe, even with 30/500 cocodamol I'm really struggling with it. I'm on day 6 and I've read the pain gets worse from here.

Any help would be appreciated

If you can (I.e no allergies, stomach ulcer etc) take an anti inflammatory too like Ibuprofen

If you speak to out of hours they can prescribe you oramorph. I had this, codeine and ibuprofen for about 8 days to cope with the pain after tonsillectomy. Also, keep eating as much as you can in order to help keep the back of the throat clean. On the plus side in a couple of days the pain will lessen considerably, you are nearly there!

Thanks! I've just been to the pharmacy and they've given me Covonia spray, which has helped a little more. I'm struggling with taking the tablets, I have a severe fear they're getting stuck in the mucusy mess at the back of my throat, makes it even worse that it's all swelling too. I've found some more Ibuprofen melt on your tongue tablets so going to see how these go.

Difflam is shit. Doctors always recommend it and I have no idea why.

I was in pain for a couple of weeks after my tonsillectomy and unfortunately ended up with an infection so keep an eye on it.

Difflam throat spray may be a good idea. Different drug to what is in the covonia. We were given it when dd1 had her tonsils removed.

The ibuprofen will help with the swelling so that's a good idea.

It's widely known as extremely sore as an adult. My friend had a hard time but her life is transformed due to less tonsillitis.
Go and get everything pain killer wise that you can.

And keep ahead of the pain by keeping up your pain killers.

How many days post op are you? I had mine done as an adult and the pain was horrendous.
I found that by day 6 things were improving

I am glad I had it done as the recurrent tonsillitis was making my life miserable.

At least you aren’t bleeding out like my husband did (5 times). It was terrifying. The pain does get better.

I feel your pain! When I had mine done I found that it took about 10 days before I was comfortable enough to eat without wincing and about 3 weeks for the pain to go. Mine wasn't helped by the fact that the surgeon accidentally dislocated my lower jaw badly during surgery (jaw has not been right since). They do have to stretch your lower jaw down quite a lot during surgery and this doesn't help with the pain you feel afterwards.
My GP gave me some mild antibiotics & co-codamol for night times. He told me take paracetamol every four hours and to take ibuprofen two hours after the paracetamol if in pain so that I was taking some sort of pain relief every two hours during the day.
Ice lollies are also your friend. Just get cheap small ones in plain fruit flavours (no lumps or milky) or icepops can be better as thin. The ice helps with swelling and pain. Eat as many as you like. A cold compress around your jaw under your chin starting behind your ears can help too.

Hope this helps. Just remember that the pain will go in a few days and you will now be infection free!!

Had them done on Monday, so hopefully things will improve from now on. Just got loads of liquid foods and glucose energy things. Only positive right now is the weight loss, my fear of the pain is putting me off food. I'm hoping to eat actual food by Monday Tuesday hopefully, going to try a bit of bread later with tea.
