Reasons for swollen ankle?

Hi,

I'm not sure whether I'd be wasting my GP's time by trying to get an appointment.. but my ankle has been swollen for a few weeks, it started off slight with some aching now and then.. it would sort of go down, then up again. It's suddenly got worse over the last week or so, it's soft, not hard, like it's full of water - but not, it's spread from just my ankle to over the top of my foot as well.
I'm trying to elevate it, rest as much as possible, using tiger balm, using ankle support. Nothing helping so far, it feels warm to the touch but not all the time.. it's achey and sometimes itchy/tingly

Do you think I should visit gp? What usually causes a swollen ankle??

Has something bitten you? Its strange that it should be doing this if you dont recall hurting it at all. I would try taking a full dose of piriton over night (in case its an allergic reaction to a bite) if that brings it down you know that you probably did get bitten by something and keep treating it with antihistamines. If it doesnt come down the definitely go to the GP

This just happened to me so would be interested in any answers. I thought mine were due to dehydration, had been on a flight to Rome and spent 4 days walking in the scorching heat. Probably didn’t drink enough water. Ankles were so swollen and even worse after the flight home, took 3/4 days to go back to normal.

Did you find out what it was @BlackCatFan ?

BlackCatFan · 19/06/2019 23:06

@glitterbiscuits No I didn't. It's gone down a lot since, but still slightly swollen all the time. If it flares up again I'll see my GP I think.

Thanks for the reply. I found your post as I thought my ankles were swollen too!

Did you get it checked? It could be a variety of things including Rheumatoid arthritis. It won't hurt to ask for a blood test to cover anything.

No, not yet. Varicose veins run in my family and mine are getting worse. I think that's what it may be connected to.
GP ( with a list of things) next week.

You should see a GP. Swollen ankles can be a sign of the heart not working efficiently.
