Loss of voice

Sore throat last Monday, Tuesday and an annoying cough. I have now literally lost my voice - just squeaking if I try at all. Never had it before to this extent, and a little bit worried if I'm honest! Chest hurts as well but I guess that's from coughing and trying to talk....

Any advice?!

Are you able to take time off work, or get help if you're caring at home?

Sounds like your vocal cords are swollen from infection and you've had to try so hard to speak your muscles are working too hard.

Rest your voice. Really rest it, but only for two or three more days. Write stuff down instead of saying it, use text etc. Don't whisper.

Drink more fluid than you can believe possible.

Inhale steam - from hot not boiling water only.

If no improvement, book a gp appointment for about two weeks after the start of it.

I've had this a few times and often comes back quickly - I just have hot honey and lemon drinks (any similar hot drink works or lemsip) and take paracetamol / flu meds (obviously not with lemsip). If it doesn't improve by end of week or so would go to doctors to see if you need antibiotics though often its viral. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Thanks all - it's quite unnerving!!! I'm trying my best to rest it and the office are delighted......

I did consider taking some time off, but there is so much going on at the moment that it would really impact the team. I feel OK in myself, so I've decided to carry on, but quietly.....!!

Monitor it closely. Be serious about resting it, it's perfectly feasible with tech now to avoid a lot of vocal use. Also use gesture, facial expression.

Don't rush to speak lots when it starts to come back. And if your voice is not completely normal in a month, ask for a referral to ENT.
