Ear infection - is this normal

2.5 weeks ago I suddenly felt like I was coming down with something, sore throat, blinding headache for nearly a week, sore all over, really tired.

This turned into a cold, headache subsided, and normal snotty nose etc.

I must have had a roaring temperature for that week, I have very little memory from it, every day was groundhog day, painkillers, work, drink plenty, see to child, bed.

On Monday I developed neuralgia in my scalp and neck, couldn't move my head more than 90 degrees, couldn't drive, very uncoordinated.

Went to dr on Tuesday, got diagnosed with ear infection and antibiotics for 5 days. This is the last day and I still feel rubbish and wiped out. Fell asleep on the settee for 90mins this afternoon and thats not like me. Pains in head and neck are better, but not gone.

I went back to work on Thursday, but I'm making silly mistakes, sweating all the time, and I feel like I just need to lie down. Memory is away to pot and I am so tired, hard of hearing and uncomfortable and uncoordinated. To add insult to injury period started 9 days early. Wtf.

Does this sound about right, or will I phone go on mon? I haven't had an ear infection since I was 4, and that was 35 years ago.

You need to go back to the GP. Bacteria come in gram negative and gram positive varieties. Ear infections are usually one (cant remember which one) so they usually give you an antibiotic that kills that variety. If you have the other variety the antibiotic wont work on it. It sounds like you probably had a mix bag of bacteria from both varieties. The antibiotic you were given killed the ones it can - so you are feeling slightly better, but the others are still breeding. You need to get something else to knock them out too.

While you're there ask for general blood work - blood count and iron levels, you might also be anaemic and ask if you can have some ear drops as it also sounds like you have fluid in your ear which needs clearing out too.

I'd go to a walk-in centre in the morning if you have one (check online they do ear infections).
