Any medical people or foot people about that would be able to tell me what the hell is wrong with my toenail? I had it tested a couple of years ago at my GP who said it wasn't a fungal infection but since then it's just got worse and is awful!!!

It's almost impossible to cut (trim) is a horrible colour, when I do manage to cut it - it smells awful - plus it's embarrassing if I don't have socks on!!!

I'm thinking I defo need to go back to GP (different GP than when I went before) but anyone any idea of what it could be what to do with it??! I've tried the over-the-counter washes, creams and 'ointments' so I'm lost!!

It looks just like the fungal infection my ex bil had.

Definitely a chiropodist - DH had what he was told weren't fungal nails for years (after running the marathon), it was only when he went to see a chiropodist that he's had treatment that actually worked.

Thanks for replies. Those that have seen similar before, were they as bad as mine? What treatment was required?

It is a fungal infection OH had one. Not nice for you.

It could also be nail psoriasis. Ask the Gp to send a clipping to the lab.

I had a fungal infection and my nail was very flaky and soft and discoloured.
Quickly sorted with some cream from my gp.

You need to go to a podiatrist, it is one of two things or a combination of them.
it's either a very deep rooted fungal infection, your practice nurse would need to send a fairly sizeable piece of nail away to the lab for analysis.
My money is on nail damage. When you damage your nail bed, easily done as they are quite fragile, either by dropping something on it, stubbing it or something like that the nail becomes permanently thickened. This is not reversible.
Because the damaged nail is very thick and porous it often becomes fungal as well.
It's no good putting anti fungal nail treatment on top of a nail like this as it will just sit on the top.
A podiatrist will use a burr (electric file) to thin the nail right out and then you can apply loceryl or some other anti fungal and it will have a chance to sink right in there. You'll need to keep going back until it's cleared.
If it's permanently thickened due to nail bed damage which I'd suspect is more likely, a manicurist will burr it diwn for you and could apply some french manicure shellac which will make it look like a normal nail but you'd have to have it done every 6 weeks.
Some people manage their own by using a dremel with burr attachment and just putting nail varnsih on it's up to you.
There are various treatments for nails like this (if it's fungal) clearasil needle treatment, laser, various others but they are quite pricey.

It looks like advanced fungal infection as it wasn't treated from the start (as you were told it's not a fungal infection).
My friend who used to play football has it and finally got treatment for it after 4+ years he has these disposable files to file the nail down and then puts nail vanish treatment on to fight it.
He was told that it's not guaranteed it will work as he's had it for so long but he says he can see a difference .

I had a nail like that. Went to podiatrist as I thought it was fungal. It was actually nail damage as I had banged my foot. She treated it and as it has grown out again , looks almost normal again.
