Hello everybody. I am a very new member and need help.
We had DS' tongue tie released few days ago. After the operation I started feeling like breastfeeding got slightly worse. Maybe I am a bit suspicious and obsessive re everything and maybe it hasn't got worse but at least, I can say that there has been no improvement with breastfeeding since the operation.
Has anybody here had their babies tongue tie divided? I really need to share their experience. Please help me...

Hi Lara welcome to mn, I'm fairly new here too.

My ds was tongue tied and could not bf at all and could only use 1 sort of teat. His tie was cut at 4 weeks and he still couldn't use different teats. I think it probably takes them a while to adjust and learn to use they're tongue in a different way.

I'm sure if you keep perserveering (sp??) it'll improve. My ds didn't realise he could stick his tongue out for a few weeks afterwards!

It does get worse initially but perserve. What baby is doing is re-learning how to latch. Bf as much as you can. Try different positions - lying down, rugby hold, cradle hold etc.

btw... Welcome

Hi Lara. welcome

i had ds3's tongue tie snipped... trying to cast my memory back that far (is only 18m but there's been a lot going on since then, not much of which was sleeping!)... as far as i remember it got better quite quickly...a few days?

agree with mars on trying lots of different positions.

hope it gets bettersoon! and good on you for persevering. mn is always here for advice/support

Hi, my Lo's tie was cut the day after he was born. Not sure if it made any difference with feeding at all. It was just taking me a while to work out how to hold him comfortably whilst feeding, and for him to instinctivly get to grips with latching on. I think Midwife cut it just to rule it out later on, in case he continued to be hard to feed.
If its any help, I hated BF to begin with, and kept at it (bribing myself, that I could eat more chocolate if I continued to BF). 6 months on, I combine feed, but realise BF is much easier in the long run!

They do need to re learn how to properly lacth. A brestfeeding counsellor to watch you feed is really worth it. I went back 5 times after ds1's tongue tie.

TranquilaManana · 23/07/2007 14:29

oh yes lizzombie - i found that too (that it gets easier with time/experience.)
3 babies in 3 years and can do it in my sleep!

Thank you very much guys. You have been very supportive. I am very happy about joining mumsnet.
Breastfeeding is really diffiult. Much more difficult than I was expecting. I don't want to give up but this "low milk supply" is killing me. I am giving him quite a lot formula at the moment and milk supply is not increasing. What a vicious circle!

Have you seen a bf counsellor if you are giving formula your breast milk supply will prob not increase he needs to feed from you more and more and more and more to stimulate the production - you need a poster called tiktok

DD had her tongue tie cut at about 20 days the latch improved enough that it was no longer excrutiating but it never got completely painless but she was too stubborn to completely change her latch - the bf lady at hospital gave up on her in the end, if I took her off to try again she just refused to feed - lol! I did manage bf until I returned to work though. The next two were much easier to bf and completely pain free.

Dd hung her tongue out of her mouth for about the next 10 months though, think it took her a while to get used to it being free!
