Erythromycin - the root of all evil!

Someone please tell me that there is a cure to the pain caused by this evil antibiotic! I can not stop taking it it’s the 6th one I’ve been put on in nearly 4 weeks and the only one that’s getting rid of the infected cyst I have. I’m on day 4, I have a 7 day course and with each day it’s getting worse. I’m up and down all night head over the loo wanting to be sick but never am, then during the day I’m exhausted and want nothing more than to sleep - both of these I can handle, What I’m struggling with is the stomach pain, its getting worse as each day passes, I could ignore the pain at first it was a little like indigestion but now I’m doubled over in pain, co-codamol isn’t working, ibuprofen doesn’t help, hot baths and laying down do nothing & I don’t know what else to do. If any of you have been on this and have found a way around the pain please tell me your secret! I only have another 3 days left but no idea how I’ll make it through work or dealing with the kids like this!

I get on well with erythromycin but ONLY if I take it with food (which goes against some advice).

Omg it's is the worst antibiotics, the burning sickness I had from it was awful, full on body jolting everytime my body was trying to be sick! This was a couple of years ago I actually wanted to call an ambulance I felt that bad!

I was prescribed this too, and I couldn't keep it down. I had to go back for something different! I feel your pain.

No not the co codamol I've always been fine with that, I haven't even managed to make the call yet my youngest is still wide awake 😭

Was the doctor at the breast clinic that prescribed them but nobody said what to do with any side effects, infact they didn't even mention there could be any (I know with anything there can be) Nor how to take, they actually wrote on prescription every 6 hours when I asked at hospital pharmacy if I'd be getting up through the night then he said no take it every 4-6 as evenly spaced as possible but not through the night. got the details on a letter here so could always give them a call instead.

The results weren't sent to my gp as far as I'm aware, my blood test results weren't from the first visit to hospital nor did he have my results from my appointment with the breast clinic in 2016.

I'm due to take the next 2 but think I'll skip tonights & hopefully sleep without it being broken by rushing to the toilet only to not actually be sick & give the clinic a call for advice, so glad I posted this though I'm not a fan of antibiotics or strong painkillers I always worry about reactions so knowing so many had the same eases that fear a little.

I do wonder if one every 2 hours instead of 2 every 4 might be better but I'll question that tomorrow too. If The clinic isn't open I can call my gp surgery, unfortunately i found via google at 8.06pm they have a normal out of hours surgery between 6 & 8pm

No advice but lots of sympathy from me OP. I was prescribed it once but never ever again. I was constantly sick and dizzy and it gave me this awful feeling of doom. People think I'm joking when I say that but I'm not, I really felt like I was going to die, emotionally rather than physically (sort of a panic attack, I suppose).

Worst three days of my life, and I've never felt like that before or since. It's on my notes, I think, that I refuse to take it again.

Best of luck to you, hope you find something better very soon.

Urgh even doctors think erythromycin is THE WORST! I had it once and couldn’t leave my bathroom for days!

Metronidazole didn’t give me any side effects other than lack of appetite though!

It's the one antiB I can't take after a serious reaction as a baby.

Coodle I actually said to someone this morning I just didn't feel right in myself I couldn't explain what it was I just felt so meh like my entire body wasn't quite right.

Never ever again is this something I'll be taking, thankfully I rarely visit the gp and need antibiotics even less the last time was about 7/8 years ago for a uti but this infection has knocked me completely thankfully it's finally getting better there's no pain in that area it's now just a little red and the skins peeling from around the area

Nasty antibiotic but it seems to be doing the trick. I'll ride it out if it means this clears up fully will have to see what they say in the morning

Update this mornings advice is as it's a common side effect to continue with the antibiotics and if the pain still continues Monday then to book an appointment with the gp. A, I'm working and work have not been helpful at all through out and won't allow me the time off to see the gp, B. My last day on them Monday not much point in getting them changed on the last day of taking them 🙈

Today I've had breakfast and in a min gonna have my first 2 along side some yoghurt and 1 cocodamol fingers crossed this helps. I wasn't up at all in the night and had no pain because I didn't take my last 2 so the break was nice :-)
