Naproxen/Tranexamic Acid OR Mirena coil?

For period pain?

What have been your experiences on either treatment?

I have been offered both avenues and have opted for the Naproxen & Tranexamic Acid route before I go down the coil route. Just looking for people's experiences on both.

Hi for pain naproxen is good but not a long term solution as is very damaging to the stomach and tranexamic acid is for lessening heavy flow rather than helping pain. There is another drug called mefanamic acid which is specifically for pain but again don't know about long term use. I have a mirena and absolutely think it's the best invention ever, I had it 3 years ago for heavy painful peri periods and it's been a godsend, no periods at all so no pain either.

I use mefenamic acid and tranexamic acid with no problems. I tried a mirena, but I expelled it.

Would highly recommend a Mirena, stopped my periods and all associated symptoms for 10 years. A bit unpleasant having it put in but worth it!

Naproxen isn't a long term solution. It can play havoc with your stomach. Give the mirena a go at least then you've tried all the options. I'm on my third mirena and love it.

Mirena here too. Mine also fell out during a routine smear and my periods came back with full force until I had another fitted a few weeks later. Literally life changing.

Thanks all. I'm in my 40s so I am loving the idea of the no-period option via Mirena (I don't need periods anymore).

I have been taking the naproxen for 2 days now pre-period and already I have stomach cramps. So no naproxen for me tomorrow - no point replacing one pain with another and it didn't get rid of the pain properly anyway! Had to intersperse with paracetamols.

I was thinking I would try the pills first before the more invasive option but it seems just within 2 days I have my answer, because of the cramps.

I'm also now considering a hysterectomy!

Thanks again. Any other thoughts more than welcome.

PS rosie39forever yes the reason I was given the tranexamic acid was for the heaviness of the periods these days (and the other for the awful childbirth style pain).

I have endometriosis. I currently have a mirena and take the pill. I've not had a period since, it's great.

Long term my gynaecologist agrees a hysterectomy will be a good option for me but don't want to be on hrt for too long. For now, I'm more than happy to stay with my mirena.

I hated it at first, really affected my mood and I ended up with a prescription for antidepressants. I dragged my feet and lucky it settled before I needed to get it dispensed.

I have had a stomach ulcer in the past as a result of use of mefanamic acid etc.
