Tooth extraction

I have braces and my orthodontist has said she wants me to have 2 teeth out. My normal dentist is going to do it. I'm absolutely petrified. The needles mainly. Anyone had experience of this? Is it as bad as I'm expecting?

I've had two teeth out, a normal tooth and a wisdom tooth, and I was terrified, particularly about the wisdom tooth but honestly the extraction itself doesn't hurt and its quick, quicker than a filling. Make sure you follow after care instructions, have some painkillers ready for when numbness from injections wear off and you'll be fine

Ah thank you! I had my brace tightened yesterday and I can't bite down it's killing! I'm such a fairy!

The injections are the worst part so to say. Once that's over you do t feel anything at all I've all 4 wisdom teeth pulled at different times never felt one.

It'll be worth it in the end. Obviously it's not a Pleasant experience but many 12 -15 year olds go through it every year.

My DD 16 was looking at some old photos yesterday from before she had her 4 teeth extracted and a brace fitted and she was saying how glad she is that she got her teeth tidied up.

Ask the dentist to put some numbing cream on the site of where he is injecting. I recently has this & it was an absolute game changer 😀 I actually managed to have an injection in the roof of my mouth on 3 separate occasions!!

Tell them you are scared of needles and they will be able to help you. Also second asking for numbing cream. My DD had 4 out when she was 14/15 and was fine, so don't worry too much about it.

I had 14 out (10 baby, four adult) as a child for orthodontic reasons. My enduring memory of it is my dad taking me to Waterstones before each appointment to buy books!

I am not scared of the dentist, but I am really, really scared of needles. My dentist knows this and is really patient and kind if I ever need treatment. The nurse holds my hand while I get the injection. I had a root canal with a specialist rather than my own dentist last year and actually brought a little stuffed toy to hold, because it helps me to have something to fiddle with. He didn’t care, and asked me what its name was, like I was five. Basically, I think dentists have seen it all, and are completely happy to work with whatever you need to make it as easy as possible for you. Good luck!

Thanks everyone I'll def ask about the numbing cream! I have a small pharmacy at home so I'm going to ply myself full of drugs and all will be well 😁

The cream comes in a variety of nice flavours, including pina colada! The dentists I worked with on sedation lists for phobic patients favoured a popcorn scented one.
Please don’t worry, OP. If your own dentist is doing the extractions they’re likely to be very straightforward ones. The awful ones with twisted impacted roots, needing surgical extraction, usually get referred to oral surgeons in hospital.

Ha thanks @Babdoc I shall peruse all their flavours, definitely! Im not worried about the extraction itself, but I've had really bad experiences with injections with an awful dentist (although my current dentist is very good) and I just can't handle them. Awful!

Dentists, like all humans, vary in their level of skill and gentleness. In 36 years I’ve only worked with one who was clumsy inserting local and had poor people skills - all the (many) rest were excellent. When I’ve been on the receiving end myself (wisdom teeth extraction), I barely felt the injections. Statistically, OP, you’re much more likely to have a good dentist than a bad one!
