Anaemia

Hi,

Went to give blood at the start of last week. I'm a regular donor, been a couple of dozen times with no problems. This time the haemoglobin test was so low that I'm not allowed to donate for at least a year. I had a blood test on Friday, so I'll get the results in a few days. It's likely that I've got anaemia. I've had very heavy periods since about September (so since I last donated blood) and been feeling completely wiped out and exhausted, so it kind of makes sense.

Assuming the anaemia is confirmed, any tips? I know it'll probably mean iron supplements, which from what I hear can cause constipation and other unpleasant side effects. My diet is pretty good, according to the leaflet I got about what I should be eating.

And how long can it take to recover? I don't want to give up giving blood yet!

I'm afraid my anaemia was discovered and i was asked to do a faecle sample. This showed I was bleeding internally and after a CT Colonography, colonoscopy and endoscopy, they found I had colon cancer.
My doctor was very thorough and had she just prescribed iron tablets, the Cancer wouldn't have been found until it was more advanced.

Oh my goodness, I hope you're doing ok now. I'm so glad your doctor was so thorough with you and it was found earlier than it might have been.

Panicking a bit now, I'm the type to get stressed about health related issues.....
