Order blood test and scans? Ive got an appointment the morning and think that could be what i need, can they do that or will i need to see a gp?

We have an advanced nurse practitioner at our gp surgery and she can do absolutely everything a gp can. If it's one of those nurses, then chances are they can.

Gosh, Meredith, so your nurse has completed five years of medical school and at least a further five years of hospital and GP training, has she?!
I very much doubt that she can do “everything” a GP can - otherwise the NHS is about to save a fortune in training costs...

As a radiographer I can and do accept x-ray and scan requests from nurses and physios who have done the correct level of advanced training and been placed on the correct register for ionising radiation regs.

Babdoc that's the whole idea, we now have incredibly highly trained medical professionals who haven't followed the traditional doctor route but are working in parallel with them providing medical services. Just because they don't have 'Dr' in front of their name (although some gain PhDs so are entitled to) doesn't mean they aren't qualified to do a similar job. They will have done a lot of the same training.

Advanced nurse practitioners have a very different role to GPs. They can indeed request blood tests, x-rays etc which frees up GP time so they can concentrate on their job without having to take time up on stuff an Advanced Nurse Practitioner can do.

The two working together well will complement each other to get the best service and outcome for patients.

You may have made the assumption that Meredith was saying a nurse is the same as a doctor in a global sense. I made the assumption that Meredith meant in terms of the OP's question about ordering bloods. But whatever Bluntness.

The pp said NP can do what the the gp can. Clearly she meant order bloods, x-rays, scans etc. This was in relation to the ops question

I don't think the pp meant a NP has the same in-depth medical knowledge as a GP.

FYI a nurse practitioner normally has full practise authority often meaning they can treat, digognose and prescribe without having to work under a doctor. I’d say they must of have some sufficient many many years in training for that babdoc. Also sure the OP didn’t require a sarcastic response to her genuine question🙄

My husband has recently spent weeks in hospital. While in ICU he was cared for by an advanced nurse practitioner. She worked with the doctors and consultants in making treatment decisions and could authorise drugs that regular nurses couldn’t. She’d spent a long time training. She was like a hybrid of the drs knowledge and the nurse’s sense for the patient, I thought she was fantastic.
