Wisdom tooth extraction

For the last week I have had an infection in my lower Wisdom tooth. This tooth has had a Root Canal already. When Dentist saw me last Monday she said that it now needs to come out. She gave me Penicillin and said she would refer me to the hospital as these root canals can be challenging to extract. The infection did not get any better and on Friday I returned to dentist. By this point it felt like my jaw was locked on that side and I couldnt open my mouth properly. Face swollen. She gave me another antibiotic and said if I come back in a week she will extract the tooth.

Well I have now finished all antibiotics. My jaw is still painful and stiff. I cant open my mouth properly though tooth feels better.
I dont understand how she initially wanted to refer me and now will attempt to take it out always supposing I can open my mouth enough.
Has anyone had experience of having a root canal (wisdom) tooth extracted? Should I wait for hospital or just let her do it?

Yes I had a root canal wisdom tooth out. The dentist did it as soon as he spotted the problem. It was a doddle. It was out before I realised! I kept saying "oh I don't like this, it's going to hurt" and he showed me the tooth and said "it's already out!". Took a few seconds and I was SO Happy to get rid of the wretched thing.

Thank you so much, that makes me alot better. I have spent the last week Googling it and all I find are horror stories!

Good luck, I'm sure you'll be fine.

I had all 4 removed in hospital when I was 23. 2 were impacted and causing regular infections. 2 just to save future hassles i think.

I had a general anaesthetic. Went well but i looked like a chipmunk for a few days and couldn't watch Dame Edna as it hurt to laugh. That's all I remember!

I think I would feel better if I was having a general anaesthetic! I have had two wisdom teeth out already but it's just because the dentist said root canal extractions can be difficult I am feeling so nervous. Hopefully this will all be a fuss about nothing!
