Fathers banned from registering newborn with GP

Hi guys,

I am trying to register my 1 week old baby at my local GP. We recently moved to the area so I am only person to have registered at the GP so far.

However, I was just told by the receptionist that Fathers are not allowed to register newborns. Only Mothers.

Now, that seems like a ridiculous and sexist rule. My other half is currently living with her parents recovering from her emergency C Section so it is difficult for her to travel back with me to register herself and the child anytime soon.

Has anyone else experienced this ? My name is on the Birth Certificate and the address is the same as well.

Thanks,

If it's the six week check and mum is registered, surely she just calls and makes an appointment.

OP says only he is registered so far. Can you not get forms for both mum and baby?

Jumbo2000 · 11/04/2019 17:41

6 weeks wait to register the birth, not to receive the actual certificate Hmm

Where are you all living to say you can get appointments at the registry office so quickly?

Odd to not be registered when expecting a baby.

My children were born in three different parts of the country, all were registered within two weeks. In fact, the law says all births must be registered within six weeks so I'm surprised your local office is so tardy.

Reading here - we got an appointment last year within 3 days. In retrospect I could have waited a week or two but i was full of crazy new mum energy and desperate to get on with things!

Scotland, we didn't need an appointment.
