Hydrogen Peroxide for tonsilitis - HELP!

Hi there! I've often seen kind people posting on here about gargling hydrogen peroxide for tonsillitis and was wondering if anyone could give me very specific instructions? Like how long for and how often exactly?

Woke up with my third bout of tonsillitis this year. Can see what I think are very small white pus spots on my throat. I've been getting it badly all my life and have had to go to hospital with quinsy twice. REALLY don't want to tell my boss I need to be off work again this week so hoping this is as helpful as people say!

There’s a product called Peroxyl (I think) that’s made just for this. You used to be able to get it in Boots etc. Tonsillitis is vile.

I've used Peroxyl on and off for years to keep on top of tonsil stones.

I gargle with it for around a minute (and am very careful not to swallow!) once or twice a week max - it does say on the bottle not to use for more than 7 days.

Thanks guys!!

I've got a hydrogen peroxide solution from boots and gargled with it twice tonight already, for about a minute...

JaneEyre07 do you suffer with tonsillitis too or do you find the peroxyl keeps it away?

Did it help op?

youngergirl · 10/04/2019 09:28

Nogodsnomasters I'm not sure... I don't think so. I've woken up and my throat still hurts really badly. I don't know if I did it too many times? I did it twice before I went to bed and once when I woke up about 4:30.

Does anyone have any advice for seeing a doctor in your new area when you've just moved house and haven't had time to register with a new one yet....? :(

If you're still registered with your old doctor I'd call them and ask if they can just leave a prescription out for you to collect since you have a history of recurrent tonsillitis they are bound to understand. Or is it like super far away? I live in Northern Ireland so we don't have those walk in clinics they have in England so maybe something like that or you may have to wait until out of hours and call them after 5.30pm usually. I really feel for you because I had scarlet fever first and then 6 days after the antibiotics it came back strep throat twice as bad and I ended up in hospital for 24hrs on a drip since I couldn't swallow my own saliva or medication, so I really give you my full sympathy xx

youngergirl when my DC were little, I think it had it 3 or 4 times a year, and twice ended up in hospital needing IV antibiotics. Due to repeated infection, the surface of my tonsils is now horribly pitted instead of smooth and I used to get these horrendous tonsil stones that give you dragon breath! The dentist told me about Peroxyl, and since using it, I've had an awful lot less stones and an awful lot less tonsillitis, so I am presuming the two are related?

Other things to try are Tyrozets from the Chemist - they have a small amount of antibiotic in, and the other ones are Dequadin. Both really help with tonsillitis.

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Thank you both so much that's really helpful!
