Hi I am getting into a panic as I am worrying over my smear test. I had one in September 2014 that was normal. Since then I have put on a lot of weight and I have dry flaky skin on my legs and other things, So I haven't had one since then :(. I have looked online, and been getting into a bit of a panic over leaving it 4 1/2 years approx. I rang this morning and they are going to see me on the Saturday clinic. Has anyone else left it this long?. I do not have any symptoms at all from what I have read. But it is causing me panic attacks and anxiety. Thank you for any help x

Please don't panic! You're doing the right thing now. Don't give yourself a hard time either as we've all put things like this off. Definitely better to be seen later than never.

Wholeheartedly agree with @Samind.

When I was young, I put mine off. All was ok. I never put it off now.

Please....relax. I've always kept up to date with mine BUT I was soooo nervous about the most recent one as the two before that were painful due to a sore on my cervix. It was, however, pain free.

You would have much more reason to be nervous if you continued to miss your smear...we have a family friend who passed away last year from cervical cancer and she said "if only I'd gone for my smear".

You'll be fine, promise. Tell the nurse you're nervous too.

Is it the test itself or the results or both you're worrying about?

I have mine and then get into a panic about the results until I get them even though I have no reason to.

The test itself doesn't bother me.

I had my last 1 2 weeks ago and I've adopted the mind set of I will not worry until i have something to worry about.

Everytime I get a panicky thought or whatever I say it to myself then go do something. It does work

Thank you for the replies so far. I just worry as I haven't had it done for 4 years and then made the mistake of reading the bad news stories online. I will get it over and done with and then have to wait for the results thanks for the replies x

Don't beat yourself up, better late than never. I went 4 years between smears before and it was fine.

RevokeRemainohsodit · 05/04/2019 12:53

I left mine for 15 years!

mrsdarcey78 · 06/04/2019 12:13

Hi thanks for the messages. Just had it done. Only took a few minutes in the end. I made the mistake of asking the nurse a question while it was being done and she gave quite a detailed answer while the speculum etc was still there!. It was a bit uncomfortable but it didn't last long and it was over with. She said a lot of people did leave it longer then the 3 years she said after this once make sure I come back in 2022 and I will get a letter about it. There is a 3-4 week wait now as a lot of people are having it done now. X

I had one in 2006 then didn't go back till 2017.(I was very stupid). Luckily all was fine.

I think it can turn into a mountain in your mind of what happens there and how painful it could be etc. It was slightly uncomfortable but with a couple of deep breaths it was over with. I think it should be maybe done annually at a yearly health check like they do in America or Germany for example so it becomes normal to get it done. Just have to wait for the results now. X

OP I had to have a couple recently because the first one couldn't be done properly as I was too dry, and therefore very painful. After using pessaries I went back, and the nurse encouraged me to do yoga breathing, in through the nose and out through the mouth. What a difference this made, I didn't even feel she was in there, seriously.
