Does anyone have an opinion on Vicks First Defence?

My phone wrote cock not Vicks, rather wondering whether to leave it like that...

I've got my first truly horrible cold in a while, and had managed to forgot the grimness. I know that it's nothing compared to the other serious illnesses we've dealt with, but at the moment this is the plague.

I've just remembered first defence. Used to have it in the UK and just seen they sell it here.

Anyone swear by it?

Also just venting.

Thanks.

I use it but I think it’s supposed to be used in the first few hours. For me, my first ‘cold is imminent’ sign is a slight sore throat. So if I use it on day one of a sore throat I may be ok. Any later and it’s too late.

Sounds like yours has already taken hold. Sorry Sad

Thanks for getting back to me, it's really expensive so at least I'm not wasting my money!

Yes, it is utterly fabulous. But you do have to start using it within 24 hours of suspecting you are getting a cold. It has seen off several colds within 24 hours both for me and my husband. The first time I tried it the cold lasted a couple of days before petering out, but I think I started a tad late. Now I start using at as soon as I start feeling a bit tired and get that dry feeling at the back of my throat.I won't go anywhere without it - I am too busy to have a cold!

I can't stand the stuff, gives me a blinding headache! However, I really like the Boots own version 😊

AnnieOH1 · 03/04/2019 21:41

What about cold n flu guard? It is about £10 in the UK from Boots. You smear a tiny bit around your nostrils - I use it before church and other big crowds. We've gone from getting a cold practically every week to not getting them at all including a toddler who always used to pick up any bug going.

HundredMilesAnHour · 03/04/2019 21:48

I also use really like the Boots own version. A colleague recommended it to me when I was suffering with a cold and it really helped. Never actually tried the Vicks one as the Boots one is great - and cheaper!

Fiontar649 · 03/04/2019 21:55

I used it quite a bit earlier this year as I had 3 heavy colds before/during Christmas. One of my colleagues and I seemed to be in a circle of passing a cold back and forth. The last time he was sick I started using it, and I haven't caught anything since. I also used it before and during a flight to America - I usually end up with a cold after a long flight. Worked a treat.

Trick is not to inhale deeply for a while afterwards - first time it was like brain freeze mixed with mouthwash in my sinuses!

I swear by it.

I've managed to dodge giant 2 colds that dh has snotted sneezed all over me from starting with a sore throat but the cold never developing further.

I use far higher doses than recommended .

Dafspunk · 03/04/2019 21:58

I find it so disgusting to use that my body now simply doesn’t get colds in fear of me ever inflicting that stuff on it ever again.

So works a treat!

BWcastle2000 · 03/04/2019 22:04

I also swear by it. I use it at the first sign of a cold (slight sniffles) and I have not had a cold in over two years because of this stuff. My DH does the same and also doesn’t get a full blown cold anymore.

LakeFlyPie · 03/04/2019 23:00

Heard same question posed to an ENT Consultant recently who said there is some evidence in support of using it (and similar) generic products but that it contains hydrochloride acid so may cause irritation.
He said he uses it before long haul flights.

Thank you, didn't see all this... I've been well for a couple of years, having been battling viruses and auto immune. Obviously haven't taken any vit d etc for a year hence back to rashes, huge over reaction to viruses etc. I might get someone to send me the boots version!

Thanks all!
