I am itching like mad all over but do t know if I can't take piriton with lithium? I've tried to google it but not really getting an answer! Does anyone know if it's ok?

Yeh it’s fine - based on 10 years of taking Lithium in the past. I don’t think there’s anything that you can’t take with it if I remember correctly?

Thanks x

Should be ok with antihistamines but check with your doctor - and find out what’s causing the itch too. Are your lithium levels ok and has your thyroid function been checked recently.
There are several dangerous interactions between lithium and other medications. These would include anti- inflammatory drugs, diuretics andace- inhibitors . The nhs does a great information leaflet that should be available

Levels were checked a few weeks ago and are ok. I am under an incredible amount of stress at the moment so could be that. Even my face and head is itching, only started yesterday but if it continues I will go to the Drs.

Did they check thyroid too? I had lithium induced thyrotoxicosis (eventually Graves’ disease) and was itchy almost to death!

You'd be better off taking an antihistamine that doesn't get into the brain, e.g. loratidine or cetirizine. Both are available from the supermarket for about a quid but it's a good idea to ask a pharmacist before mixing anything with lithium.

Lithium and chlorpheniramine (Piriton®) both have some central nervous system depressant effects and these can add up, producing drowsiness or, in extreme cases, respiratory depression. Pretty rare with the kinds of doses you're likely to be taking but it's worth avoiding the risk. You also should avoid mixing either with alcohol: adding alcohol to the combination of lithium and chlorpheniramine would be very risky.

@BuffaloCauliflower - there are lots of things it's not safe to take with lithium: there are 190 severe interactions listed in the British National Formulary. It is a drug with which you have to be very, very careful.

I've not been on it long, probably 2 months so all I've had checked are my lithium levels and a basic kidney function test. My mum had under active thyroid so I am aware it could affect me. The itching seems to have stopped today. I was in a really bad way yesterday, very stressed and upset so it may have been that. If it happens again I will go to the Drs. I do suffer from eczema so I get itchy sometimes but it's usually just my legs! Piriton did nothing son won't bother again! Was up all night scratching! X
