Questran / BAM / IBS

I was diagnosed last month with Bile Acid Malabsorption having had IBS symptoms for years. Apparently around 1/3 of IBS sufferers have undiagnosed BAM which can be successfully treated (if you're lucky!) with drugs like Questran. I thought I'd flag this up in case it helps someone else, but also wondered if anyone else had experience of Questran. It's working to an extent for me - diarrhoea not happening so much anymore but I'm still getting awful cramps so still really miserable with it all. Back to gastro in another month but fed up of being awake and in pain for hours every night.....

Were you also tested for coeliac disease?

Sorry I don't know about BAM but wondered if you had tried FODMAP diet? It would mean excluding things for a while, might be worth trying gluten free to see if it makes a difference as coeliac test can be false negative too.

I tried that too for a while and it didn't help really. We all produce bile to help digest foods and around 95% of it is re-cycled naturally back to the gall bladder. Tests showed that I recycle 1.5%....15% is considered really low. Just so glad that this has been picked up but sorting out the meds/dosage isn't easy.
