I think this is because the germs irritate the mucous membranes so in your throat that causes pain and coughing and your nose produces too much mucous.

I feel like I read once that the cells in your throat get damaged and inflamed by the infection I just read something interesting from a quick google search too

Because the cells that are full of virus burst to release more virus that has been replicated and so the throat lining is raw
