Painful knees when sitting

What's this all about? I've been aware of painful knees when sitting down in a "proper" "feet on the floor" situation for years. I've never enjoyed really going to the cinema for example because it's uncomfortable. But this week I've been really aware of the problem. I've had a few days sat at a desk and a bit of air travel which has meant heaps of sitting around waiting.

My knees are fine when driving and when sat at home on the sofa lounging. My knees don't hurt in any other aspect of daily life.

I'm 45, fit and a healthy BMI.

Anyone know what this is? Or if there's anything I can do about it?
