Milk/lactose intolerance? Any experts please?

I've always struggled to digest milk - 'lactose intolerance' runs in the family (siblings, parent and children). I'm early 60s. When Lactofree milk came into the shops I was delighted. I don't eat/drink much milk but do enjoy a dash in tea and coffee, and don't really have symptoms. But then my local supermarket started stocking Lactofree yogurt. I bought a four pack and ate them in 2 days - and the symptoms came screaming back - cramps, nausea and diarrhea.

So now I am wondering whether it isn't the lactose I am reacting to but something else in milk. What else is there??

Any expert advice please? The yogurts were much nicer than soya and coconut yogurts.

Sounds more like cows milk protein allergy than lactose.

People can have CMPA and tolerate small amounts of dairy but have problems with higher amounts/concentrations.

I would suggest looking at the CMPA website and doing the milk ladder yourself to see if that identifies how much dairy you can manage (if it’s dairy that’s the issue).

It could also be that you happened to react to one of the other ingredients/flavourings, or that it was just too much at once. Maybe try half a yogurt made by a different brand and see how you get on.

Thanks so much Ely, that's really helpful.
