Returning unboxed meds to pharmacy

flowersinthebedroom · 27/02/2019 18:25

I take a lot of medication so fill my pill boxes once a month, my gp has changed one of meds so I have 3 weeks worth of a drug.
I put the loose tablets into a small plastic bag and took it to the pharmacy.
The assistant refused to take it as it wasn't in the foil packet or box. I don't have the box.
I have no idea what to do with them.

Put them in the bin

Letsnotargue · 27/02/2019 18:31

I’d check with the pharmacist. As long as they’re not chemo drugs they’re generally ok to be disposed of together, and it would surely be better for them to be at the pharmacy thankicking around your house or in your bin, only to end up in a landfill or incinerator.

flowersinthebedroom · 27/02/2019 18:38

Binning them would be irresponsible, it's a drug which can be abused. I don't want to flush them either.
Lets not I'll try again and ask to speak to the pharmacist if I'm refused again. I should have done that the first time but I was a bit taken aback.

Can they be dissolved and then poured away?

needthisthread · 27/02/2019 18:54

You are over thinking. It's not irresponsible to bin them. Unless you think drug addicts are raking your bins at night.

dementedpixie · 28/02/2019 21:51

Does the pharmacy not just dispose of them too?

RootDeToot · 28/02/2019 21:54

Surely bagging them up and putting them in your bin where they will go into landfill is better than dissolving them or putting them in the toilet where they will go into the water system.

dementedpixie · 28/02/2019 21:54

Try a different chemist?

Soontobe60 · 28/02/2019 21:56

The pharmacy is not allowed to take unpackaged medicines. I had a similar situation with my dad when he died, and they could in,yntake the packaged meds, they told me to put the others in the dustbin in bin day.
