Peppermint Oil for IBS

I have IBS of the mixed kind, I go anything up to 6 times a day with almost constant urgency or almost nothing at all for 2 or 3 days.
It’s becoming a real problem as I’ve now developed anxiety around the diarrhoea episodes and my bowels can literally turn to liquid if I know I have no access to loos or if it’s difficult to go (stuck on the phone in work or in a meeting etc)

I decided to start trying enteric coated peppermint oil capsules on Thursday and today I can tentatively say they may be helping. I’ve had hardly any gippy tummy feelings and every day a very normal motion just once per day (no umpteen trips trying to clear out).

However, I can smell the mint everywhere! It’s in my urine, I can taste it on my breath, when I blew my nose it seemed minty and DH has remarked that whilst DTD my undercarriage also smells of mint 🙈

Has anyone else had this? Is it dangerous? I’m a bit concerned that I’m harming myself (kidneys, liver etc). Nothing I can find online suggests there’s a problem with taking it and I’m taking only 2 per day (one first thing in the morning the other last thing at night).

Anyone had success with peppermint oil or is this the placebo effect? Any experiences would be most welcome

Hi
I'm in the same situation as yourself, either constipated or diarrhoea and then the anxiety of travelling/work/meetings with worries about excusing myself for a bathroom trip or not knowing if there is a toilet near by. I've a holiday coming up and I'm dreading it. I found an earlier thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/childrens_health/668742-Peppermint-oil-and-IBS-anyone-tried-this and this seems interesting. I'm going to source mints made from peppermint oil and see if this helps. I've also started counselling (CBT mainly) and am hoping for improvements! Let me know how you get on with anything you try :-)
